Stem Cell Therapy is one of the most exciting new treatments to hit the Veterinary market in the treatment of canine arthritis for quite some time. The treatment involves using Stem cells to heal diseased joints. Stem cells are a type of regenerative cell and form part of the body’s repair mechanisms. They are found throughout the body and when a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to remain either a stem cell or change into a specific cell type with a specialised function, such as muscle cell or bone cell. Injected stem cells may act by replacing lost or damaged cells, by reducing inflammation in the diseased tissue or improving the function of cells.

When undergoing treatment for stem cell therapy a dog goes under a general anaesthetic so stem cells can be injected into the joint. Generally they then stay overnight before going home the next day. In most cases the vets and owners see an improvement within 10 days. These improvements include a decrease in pain and inflammation and an increase in mobility. So far over several hundred dogs have been treated, with significant improvement in over 90% of cases.

We are now happy to offer Stem Cell therapy at Highton Veterinary Clinic. We are the only clinic in Geelong so far which is able to offer this new treatment, several specialist Veterinary Centres in Melbourne have been offering it for a while.

If your pet suffers from arthritis or has undergone bone surgery and you would like to minimise the chance of arthritis developing then this may help your pet. To date it is only available for dogs, not cats unfortunately. If you would like to discuss this further with us please contact us at the clinic.
